By extending the definition of African American language usage beyond (surface level) syntax, phonology, and vocabulary etc. into (deep level) speech acts, nonverbal behavior, and cultural production, the role of language as a major influence in reality construction and symbolic action is emphasized. The multiethnicity of symbols is more apparent in this view (Asante, 1974). Debose (2001) reminds us that the everyday experiences of African Americans require heightened attention to language use and ritual performance.

In this respect, epistemic approaches complement linguistically diverse or African American approaches to literacy, rhetoric, and composition because they center on one’s “ways with words” as a way of knowing. Further, epistemic oriented rhetorics underscore the point that meaning is co-constructed. Borderlands rhetoric has as its emphasis the political and ethical relations involved in acquiring academic literacy. Horner (1994: 44) explains: This does not mean we ignore points of difference, problems we or other readers have with their writing.

However, whatever the ingredients of the English spoken by Africans in the New World, it was no doubt lined with a strand of critical identity consciousness developed in the Old World. “Into the middle years of the seventeenth century [in the Chesapeake region of the colonies, for example] and perhaps later, slaves received the benefits extended to White servants in the mixed labor force” (Berlin, 1998: 32). The “benefits,” however, of this complex system included abuse and exploitation, with Black people being brutalized and exploited far worse than Whites, their material and social situation one of degradation unimaginable.
